Stony Batter Estate occupies a series of rolling hills at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Auckland’s most renowned winegrowing region. The extent of the land holding- there are over sixty different vineyard sites- means that there are distinct variations in elevation, soil type and aspect. Expressing the terroir of these sites is the cornerstone of Stony Batter’s winemaking philosophy. Matching the grape variety to the site in which it performs best is the result of nearly ten years of planting, experimentation and assessment. As a result, Stony Batter has a wide range of varieties under vine, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The use of the elevated hilltop sites for the whites and the sun-drenched valley locations for the reds ensures that the wines have optimum balance, harmony and concentration.
