Chateau Montelena was founded in 1882 by Alfred Tubbs, a prominent San Francisco businessman. At the time of its founding the Chateau Montelena estate ;measured 254 acres, of which 100 were planted to grapes. In 1972 the Barrett family bought the property. Mr. Barrett's vision was to make one of the world's great wines, and from the very beginning he shaped the culture and environment of Montelena toward that goal.
