Initiated in 1995, The Crossings is comprised of 346 acres of wholly owned vineyards located in the Awatere Valley, a recognized sub-region of Marlborough. The name “The Crossings” refers to the point where 19th century settlers forded the Awatere River. The estate is made of three distinct vineyard sites. All the grapes for The Crossings come from these three vineyard sites “The beauty of the Awatere,” says winemaker George Elworthy, “is that the sites are not homogenous. There are several different levels of terraces and all have different soil characteristics. The braided nature of the lower terraces means that even within one site there are stone/silt variations—ideal for isolating smaller pieces of land for reserve labels. “Only The Crossings has access to such a spread of Awatere sites, soils and microclimates,” says viticulturist Richard Bowling. “As a result, the wines that flow from these terrains are unique.
