Founded in 1949 in Bordeaux by the four Castel brothers with a wine-trading company CASTEL FRERES, the Group grew in the 50's and 60's through internal growth, creating bottling centres. It was at the end of the 60's that the Group began to buy CHATEAUX of great quality. Today, it owns and manages over 600 hectares of vines in the Bordeaux region, making it one of the leading wine-making operations in the region. In the 70's and 80's, by external growth, this expansion continued with the takeover of the companies NICOLAS and LA FRANCAISE D'EXPORTATION (LFE) in 1988, then at the beginning of 1992, the purchase by the Castel Group of its main competitor on the wine market, the SOCIETE DES VINS DE FRANCE French number 2 in the sector, as well as of BEDHET VALETTE, a company specialised in catering. In 1999, with the firm intention of consolidating its dominant position in the sector of good-quality varietal wines, the Castel Group bought the DOMAINES VIRGINIE.
