California-based E & J Gallo Winery, the world’s largest winemaker, aims to quickly increase it smarket share in Japan from 4% to 10%. To do this,it has opened a second distribution channel for its wines in Japan through a deal with Suntory Ltd. By volume, Gallo heads the list of foreign firms in this market of 30 million cases (270 million liters) per year market. Distribution, however, through 10-year-old Gallo Japan Co., Ltd. had been restricted mainly to large supermarkets and discount liquor stores. The contract with Suntory improves access to restaurants, small independent shops and convenience stores.
