Halewood
International Ltd., is one of the most important independent
producers and distributors of alcoholic beverages in the UK,
have imported wines from Romania since 1987. In 1998 Halewood
acquired Vinalcool Prahova, one of its Romanian suppliers,
and wanting to reflect the emphasis on
producing quality wines have renamed the company Halewood
Winecellars (Cramele Halewood).
|
|
Halewood
Winecellars consist of five wineries
(Paulesti, Valea Calugareasca, Urlati, Vadu and Tohani) all
situated in Dealu Mare, one of Romania's
finest wine regions for the production of quality red
wines. The company is richly endowed with extensive underground
cellars ensuring excellent conditions for the maturation of
red wines in both traditional large oak casks and new French
and Romanian barriques. In Dealu Mare, the vineyards are located
on gently sloping hills reminiscent of Burgundy, even though
the region is situated on the same parallel
as other two famous wine regions
of the world, Bordeaux and Tuscany.
|
|
Halewood
have been quick in realizing the regions immense potential:
superb expositions, microclimate, soil structure and a long
local experience in working with both famous
French grape varieties (Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon
and Merlot) and valuable native varieties such as Feteasca
Neagra. To those natural assets, an investment program in
upgrading the production facilities, amounting to 7 million
dollars has ensured the level of quality expected by the most
discerning palate. In fact, in very short time, the wines
produced at Prahova, under the internationally recognized
brand of Prahova Valley, have obtained the highest
accolades ever bestowed on a Romanian wine (Grande
Medaille D'Or in 2002 in Brussels for the 1999
Special Reserve Prahova Valley Pinot Noir and Gold
Medal at The Mondial du Pinot Noir in 2002 for
the 1999 Reserve Prahova Valley Pinot Noir).
