Whitley Neill Limited, an independent company was formed in May 2004 to fulfill the long-term dream of the founder Johnny Neill to create new, exciting and innovative premium drinks offerings to consumers.

Johnny Neill was born in 1972 less than half a mile from the family distillery in Warrington, England. The family's association with brewing and distilling dates back to 1762. He has always had a fascination of Gin and always wanted to create his own company to support a portfolio of premium and super-premium spirit brands. Whitley Neill came about to pursue this goal and our London Dry Gin is the first in the portfolio.

Unlike most premium gins Whitley Neill Gin is bottled at a higher strength of
42% alc/vol , this is the ideal strength to bind together the flavours and
aromas of all 9 botanicals.

The secret of Whitley Neill Gin's incomparable taste and unforgettable aromas lies in the purity of the alcohol and the proportion of botanicals used in each distillation. The alcohol used in our Gin is superior quality grain with a purity of at least 96%. The botanicals used in our London Dry Gin include our signature African botanicals Baobab Fruit and Cape Gooseberries and the following more traditional ones:
Cut and dried Angelica root from Western Europe, Dried Lemon peels from Spain, Dried Orange peels from Spain, Cassia bark from South East Asia, Florentine Iris (Orris Root) powder from Italy, Coriander seeds from Western Europe and Juniper berries from Tuscany and Umbria in Italy.

  • The Baobab Tree provides food, water, shelter and relief from sickness.
  • The Vitamin C content of the fruit is almost 6 times higher than that of an orange.
  • Its flowers are pollinated at night by fruit bats and bush babies.
  • The fruit pulp has medicinal qualities and can be prepared as a refreshing drink.
  • Baobab seeds are also roasted and used as a coffee substitute in rural areas.

The method we use is called "Batch Distillation" which takes place in a pot still. This is a complete operation like malt whisky rather than the continuous running of the stills as in the production of grain whisky or cheaper, less premium Gins. Our main still is made of traditional copper, over 100 years old and going strong.

WALL STREET JOURNAL EUROPE - May 2006
"Perhaps the most exotic new gin is Whitley Neill, which, although produced in England, lists the fruit of the African Baobab tree and the cape gooseberry among its ingredients."

Fine Expressions - March 2006
"Whitley Neill Gin is the creation of Johnny Neill, a representative of the fourth generation of the Greenall Whitley brewing and distilling family. Driven by a passion for his wife's African homeland, Neill has embraced not only traditional gin botanicals, but also Cape Gooseberry and the signature botanical seeds from the Baobab tree."

ESQUIRE MAGAZINE - January 2006
"Our favorite new brand of gin, Whitley Neill London Dry, boasts some impressive figures."

FINANCIAL TIMES - November 2005
"Inspired by Africa, Made in England" is the tag line; wild baobab fruit and cape gooseberries join the more usual botanicals in this pot-still gin. It's subtly done, with airy, fresh, citrussy aroma and close-textured, rooty flavour ideal for cocktail mixing."

FRESH Magazine - November 2005
"WHITLEY NEILL (5 STARS*****)
This is a gin with a difference, smooth and smokey - the nine botanicals (including the cape gooseberry and Baobab) add a delicious fruitiness to the clear drink. Influenced by Africa, this is a must buy present for anyone who likes gin."
