Westend Estate was established by Francesco and Elizabeth Calabria, newly arrived migrants from Italy in 1927. They purchased a five acre block of land at the Western end of the township, Griffith in the Riverina region of New South Wales.
The winery became known as Calabria Wines, now owned and operated by their son, Bill Calabria. In 1974, Bill changed the name to Westend Estate Wines with the aim of increasing the quality and range of wines offered by the winery. |
As testimony to the success,Westend Estate Wines have been honoured with many medals and trophies from major Australian and International Wine Shows. Westend Estate was one of the first to consistently win gold medals from Riverina fruit particularly from red wines.
In a few short years, Bill Calabria and his team have been awarded over 30 trophies since 2000 at National and Regional Wine Shows across Australia and internationally. Bill is a strong advocate of the Riverina region. He works constantly to ensure the region maintains its public profile and reputation for producing premium, great-value wines. |

Westend Estates 3 Bridges Chardonnay has achieved outstanding results, making the ‘Best Australian Wines Under $20’ section. Receiving an exceptional 90 points out of 100 Oliver comments; "A wine whose richness and finesse could easily eclipse many significantly dearer wines. Big, broad but balanced, this smooth and harmonious chardonnay reveals a delicate perfume of peach and melon over nutty, dusty and lightly toasty nuances of vanilla oak. Smooth and buttery, its generous, juicy expression of peaches, cream and grapefruit-like flavour, sweet vanilla oak and buttery malolactic undertones finishes with a soft but tightly knit acidity.” (Page 288) |
|
Making the press again is one of Westend’s most successful wine, 3 Bridges Durif, Oliver has rated this wine 87 points out of 100. “This very forward, juicy and in-your-face durif offers a meaty dollop of dark plums, blackberries and briar backed by some pretty toasty, caramel and vanilla-like American oak.” (Page 288)
Also receiving great reviews are the 3 Bridges Cabernet Sauvignon and the 3 Bridges Golden Mist Botrytis Semillon. Oliver awards the Golden Mist Botrytis 89 points while the Cabernet Sauvignon received 87 points out of 100.

Quaff 2008 By Peter Forrestal |
29th October 2008 |
|
|
Forrestal considers the reliables as "consistent-quality wines, year in, year out. The Westend Richland Sauvignon Blanc is one of the Reliables having been reviewed in each edition of Quaff. It’s stunning performance as most of the other Riverina, or indeed warm area, sauvignons lack intensity and concentration of flavour." (Page 66)
Rated as GOOD in Quaff, Forrestal comments on the Richland Sauvignon Blanc. "A drum roll for the Riverina's best and most consistent Sauvignon Blanc of all time. In 2007, it has that bright grassy, green bean character that heralds a crisp, clean, fruity wine". (Page 68)
Richland Pinot Grigio is rated as 'BLOODY GOOD'. "A terrific quaffer, but it's not what you expect of Pinot Grigio - but I’m not sure it matters...Easy to like". (Page 77)
Also rated as 'BLOODY GOOD' in Quaff is the Richland Shiraz, Forrestal comments on this "fantastic wine". "It's from Bill Calabria and his team at a standout Riverina Winery...their best red under the label...lively, juicy red current and black plum flavours, is succulent and freshly, almost velvety, before a clean, refreshing finish. A delicious quaffer". (Page 123) "The affable Bill Calabria and the guys at Westend Estate make some terrific wines" including the Richland Cabernet Merlot which is rated as 'BLOODY GOOD'. Forrestal considers this wine as "An attractive musk stick and blackberry pastille fragrances, smooth texture, dark plum and blackcurrent flavours...a good current drinking - though you could hold on to it for a little while". (Page 136)
Outback Cabernet Merlot, rated as 'PRETTY GOOD' by Forrestal who comments on "The Cheapie of Westend Estates ranges". Forrestal expresses the "musk stick aromas, sweet red berry flavours and firm, reasonably strong tannins". (Page 138)
Calabria Saint Macaire has featured in the other red varietals category. Forrestal has concentrated on this rare variety in which Westend Estate are the only makers of in Australia, "I don't know of anybody else but Bill Calabria who produces a wine from this grape variety". Rated as 'PRETTY GOOD', Forrestal also comments "It's aromatically intriguing with talc, musk stick fragrances, ripe sweet fruit flavour and high acidity to finish. Different". (Page 133) |

Westend Estates award winning 3 Bridges Durif have made the headlines again. Featuring in the recent Gourmet Traveler WINE magazine. The popular 3 Bridges Durif has been awarded five stars and scored 93 points out of 100 within the category 'Winemakers Section Durif', with an outstanding review; "A dual gold-medal winner and a standout durif, beating Rutherglen at its own game. With plum cake and fruitcake, its clean and ultra-ripe to sniff, vibrant and massive, bold and bolshine". |
|
|
Westend Estate is a proven quality maker of Durif, a rare variety in Australian winemaking with grapes grown in the warmer climates of Riverina and Rutherglen regions. What makes Westend Estate's Durif special? Bill Calabria, Chief Winemaker and Managing Director says. "We have won over 55 medals for our Durif variety since 2001." This clearly makes Westend Estate one of the best makers of Durif in Australian winemaking. Durif is a deeply coloured wine, full bodied and lively.
The vine buds shoot inconveniently early but coupled with our warm climate gives wines of good structure and acidity. The 3 Bridges Durif has won 11 trophies, 28 Gold, 20 Silver and 16 Bronze since 2001 and was recognised as one of the Top 40 Wines of NSW. This wine was also in the taste off for the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy at the Melbourne Wine Show last year.
The 3 Bridges Durif is an intense deep purple colour with a vibrant purple hue. It displays an aromatic blood plum and dark chocolate nose. The full bodied palate of ripe blackberries, plums and chocolate is supported by toasty American oak, contributing vanillan and coconut. The palate is rich with a big tannic mouth feel and long fine-grained tannin finish, with sweet fruit and warm alcohol. 3 Bridges Durif retails for $19.95.
Westend Estate have always set a high standard for quality and exhibited consistency and excellence across all wine ranges. These achievements not only enhance the reputation of the Westend winemaking team but the Riverina region as a whole. Westend Estate continue to over deliver on all their products and are continuously implementing innovative ideas in order to produce wines of uniqueness, excellence for consumers to experience and enjoy. |
